Nothing comes between her and ADDANAC CITY...

Boy, it seems like Hank is everywhere. The little seven-year-old terror is wreaking havoc all over the internet. I love drawing the tiny tyke, but this is one kid that I would never wanna meet nor could I tolerate babysitting him.

Hank has done it all, from giving his teacher a live beehive to almost getting his father castrated for mistaken adultery. He’s also left his best friend hangin’ after breaking a neighbor’s window. Yeah, Hank’s a handful, and I’m so glad he’s just an imaginary character.

We can all have a ball laughing at his zany antics as we give thanks to above that we don’t have to deal with him in real life. If you know a kid who’s kinda similar to Hank, all I can say is: “Dag. I’m sorry.” 🙂

AC 56

As an adult, I’m thoroughly enjoying the advancements in technology that are taking place in the world nowadays. I’m just thrilling myself silly texting and sending photos and emailing and doing all sorts of wondrous things with my computer and cell phone. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be a kid and have access to all that. I’d probably find some way to cheat in class (not that I condone any such malfeasance). Boys today don’t even have to ransack their parents’ room to find Dad’s old stack of Playboys anymore. It’s all right at their fingertips (get yer minds outta the gutter).

My kids trip out when I regale them with tales of days of yore about telephones that used to have cords on them and how you had to have your phone conversations wherever the phone was kept with whomever was in the room. And don’t let me get started with them on the blessing of owning an Atari 2600.

I know they roll their eyes at me like I did my grandparents when told of the days of walking to school. Times have changed, but I’m doing my darnedest to keep up with those cats and their hep ways.

Gah…I feel so old. Let me get back to watchin’ The Price is Right.

ADDANAC CITY COMICS~ Hank’s Dad Sings The Greatest Hits

AC 78

10/14/08 A lot of times strip ideas just come to me out of the blue or by ordinary means. In one particular instance, I was preparing for the day, showering, shaving, and whatever, when I turned on the old radio in my bathroom. It was one of those old-school radios with the dial knob that you had to use to tune with. For some reason the radio wasn’t set to my regular station, but I listened to what was on anyway. Pleasantly enough, “Benny and the Jets” was playing. I’ve always had mad respect for Elton John and his plethora of nifty songs.

Needless to say, I started singing along, getting more and more into the rhythm of the song. As the chorus was blaring and I was crooning to the ceiling, I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror and just cracked up laughing! I thought it was so amusing that, here I was, a dude more comfortable belting out Lil’ Wayne lyrics was doing my best (or worst) Elton John impersonation. I was so glad that no one was around to catch me. I imagined Hank being there watching me with fascinated disgust and wondered what that little mischievous tyke would say. Then I took it just a tad bit further and envisioned Hank’s dad singing that song while in the shower. As with most of the ADDANAC CITY comic strips, the ideas just take on a life of their own. I could see Hank wielding a camcorder as he threatened to put Dad on YouTube.

So, yeah, that’s how this strip was born. It was one of my all-time favorites to create and I think it shows in the execution of the art and colors how much I enjoyed working on it.

AC 89

This is another fan-favorite and one of my personal faves. In this strip, Hank and his dad go to their local video store in attempts of finding the perfect set of movies to rent. As all of us family-folk know, there’s a struggle to find videos that we and the children both can watch. It’s hard to locate a family-movie (PG) that will satisfy grown-up tastes as well as kids’ palates. I think we end up getting the good stuff for ourselves and foisting some dredge on our kids (although the kids’ selection has improved remarkably within the past ten years).

As for myself, I LOVED Superbad. I dunno if I wanna let my children watch it. Coincidentally, they have already seen it because they begged their mom to rent it for them and she had no clue how outrageous it was. Lucky tots (therapy has already been scheduled).

That reminded me of the old days when my family first got a VCR. My parents had no idea that videos had ratings, and that so long as I found a movie that would keep me outta their hair for 90 minutes, they were cool. As a Hank-like adolescent, I took full advantage of that. I rented all of the R-rated stuff, mostly comedies and action flicks. I had a ball watching my lil’ disgusting videos, my parents none the wiser. One of my favorite movie series when I was a kid was “Porky’s”. Those movies totally helped warp my tender, young mind (thanks, guys!). Nowadays, however, movies like Porky’s seem rather tame in comparison to what’s out now. So, I thought it would sorta be fun to have Hank’s dad tell him to pick out one of the classics. Usually, that’s a safe bet. Hahaha! Not this time.

And for those of you who liked Porky’s and films featuring crazy high-school debauchery, please check out Superbad.

AC 57

Hank’s dad catches the onslaught of most of Hank’s questions regarding life. Usually, Hank’s long list of inquiries grows irritating to dear ol’ dad, but in this strip, Pop decides to have a bit of fun with his only son.

Hank doesn’t ever seem to have both oars in the water, but the answers to this series of questioning will really have his head spinning. Dad’s gonna have a lot to answer for when Hank becomes a teenager.

ADDANAC CITY 9/03/08 Hank & His Report Card

Photobucket

This is one of my early strip favorites. When I started this revamp of ADDANAC CITY (the first incarnation came out in late 1994), Hank was never intended to be the epitome of a model student. He didn’t pay attention in class, he sassed his teachers, and he antagonized his principal. As a result, he received extremely pitiful grades. Christie, who is Hank’s arch-nemesis, always seems to be at the top of her class. She studies, she takes notes. Heck, she even goes for the extra-credit, thus blowing the curve.

So, needless to say, when Report Card Day arrives, Hank and Christie are at opposite ends of the educational spectrum. She loves to tease Hank about his poor marks and she especially vexes him by describing his parents’ outraged reaction. I like how this strip came out. It’s a fan-favorite, too. Most readers like the multiple ha-ha’s in this one.

I’ll be diggin’ in the crates and pulling out some of the other “platinum hits” and explaining their creations. If you have any personal faves from the official website, let me know, and I’ll post up a lil’ behind-the-scenes special on ’em. Until then, keep enjoying Hank and the rest of the gang in Addanac City.
